WORKSHOPS

Surya Namaskara: Why we Salute The Sun

The Yoga Makaranda, one of the oldest- known yogic texts to describe the Sun Salutation Sequence, was writen in 1934 by T. Krishnamacharya.

He was the teacher of K. Patabhi Jois founder of the KPJAYI  and B.K.S Iyengar founder of Iyengar Yoga and it was these two great teachers that gave birth to almost all of today´s modern practices.

During this workshop Marque will teach you the mind and body benefits of saluting the sun 6 days a week and will lead you through the classic forms of Sun A and Sun B as well as modified versions for people of all ability level. Additionally we will explore other more challenging ways of moving through the forward and backward transitions that can be used to create unbelievable strength in your personal practice.

Whether you have practiced for a month, a year or a decade this is a workshop that you will not want to miss.

Intelligent Backbends

There is a great debate about the glutes in the backbending world.

Whether to engage or soften them has many yogis confused and frustrated. In this workshop we will discuss the anatomy of the low back and hips in depth and attempt to call a peace treaty between the squeezers and the softerners.

More importantly, after we all understand the functional anatomy being discussed, we will se how the two methods actually feel in our bodies. Once you are more informed about YOUR backbending you will be able to learn the steps required to deepen them safely.

Transitions of Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga doesn´t need to be physically sacary or intimidating. The system is made up of two basic components.

Asanas wich are the postures that are held for a set number of breaths and Vinyasas wich are simply movements that are linked with breaths and are used as the transitions between the asanas.

In this workshop we will discuss the importance of vinyasa, break down the wall of confusion with the vinyasa count, and work through the difficult transitions in both the standing and the seated asanas.

Meet Marque & Sarah

Marque and Sarah both, independently, found yoga in their early 20´s but didn´t crossed paths this way. It was rock climbing and their mutual love of the outdoors that brought them together years later. Once they discovered the physical and mental parallels that Ashtanga and climbing shared they both knew this was their yoga practice. With no Ashtanga teachers in the area, they found themselves with no choice but to get up early and practice on their own before work each day.

During this time they attended a 200 hour teacher training and several

Ashtanga workshops and intensives.

In the fall of 2014 Marque decided to follow in the footsteps of the teachers that he most respected and apply for study at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI) was accepted and spent the first two months of 2015 in Mysore, India learning under the guidance of R. Sharath Jois.

Since that first trip, Marque has practiced with Sharath during multiple US tours and has also returnto India each year to study and practice at the KPJAYI. Marque recieved the blessing as an Authorized Level 2 Teacher from Sharath on December 2017 during his morning practice.Marque and Sarah are the owners of Great Lakes Ashtanga Yoga where they run a full Mysore program, teach private lessons and host workshops.

Marque and Sarah, along with their adopted indian street dog travel as often as possible to climb and to share yoga with others.
